I met Grace Stinton through friends of friends, which was the typical way I found participants. In Anthropology, this is called “snowballing interviews.” Each interviewee or contact within one’s network is asked to refer another participant.
Those who referred me to Grace were excited for me to interview her, as she had been a "Rosie the Riveter." She was in her 90s when we met, but remembered her experience in vivid detail. Grace described to me life in the factory, that perhaps what she did for work would not be allowed today due to safety concerns. In her photo above, she holds the gloves she used in the factory.
I had the pleasure of meeting Grace again in 2019 at a book launch event. I'm thankful for her family's continued contact and support. They told me that Grace passed away in February 2024 at 101 years old. This episode is in memory of her contribution to this book.
